Most important is that the electorate in the north has asked for less spending in Brussels and is getting that. A scenario in which EU spending had increased while national budgets are cut drastically was totally unpalatable.
The criticism leveled against the compromise is all excellent and true, we will rue trading in a progressive investment agenda so that reactionary France can “keep its countryside alive” as if its still the same as Gauguin and van Gogh painted. Soon the EU budget will be even more French Pork. Excellent, ecological and happy pork of course. But so expensive most can’t buy it, without subsidies that is. Which is what the CAP is used for in France as well: subsidizing food for the poor because its too expensive for them. No kidding.
