Vladimir Putin is visiting the Netherlands in April. I’d be surprised if his visit doesn’t coincide with the inauguration of Willem Alexander as King Willem IV of the Netherlands on April 30th. The Netherlands and Russia go way back: Czar Peter “the great” spent a few months in “Holland” to learn the art of shipbuilding, poldering and Dutch commerce. This is a legacy that endures in St. Petersburg, the city Vladimir Putin was born in and that Czar Peter founded. Also Royal Dutch Shell, the oil company, is heavily invested in Putin’s Russia, and the Royal Dutch family owns a sizable historical stake in the company thanks to King William III’s foresight in 1890.
With Vladimir Putin attending, who won’t?
